Aztec Calendar Cufflinks — Sterling & Alpaca, Mexico, c. 1950s–70s

A striking pair of vintage cufflinks featuring the iconic Aztec Sun Stone — one of the most recognisable symbols of ancient Mexico.

The circular face, measuring 14mm in diameter, is finely detailed with the intricate calendar design, originally carved by the Mexica civilisation in the early 16th century, during the reign of Moctezuma II (c. 1502–1520).

Rediscovered in Mexico City in 1790, the Sun Stone became a lasting cultural emblem, later inspiring mid-century Mexican silversmiths — particularly those working in Taxco — to reinterpret its bold geometry into jewellery.

These cufflinks are a product of that movement, most likely dating from the 1950s to 1970s, a period widely regarded as a golden age of Mexican silver design. The face is marked sterling silver, while the reverse toggle mechanism utilises alpaca, a durable alloy traditionally used to strengthen the mechanism — a common and practical feature of the time.

The result is a piece that balances history and wearability:
a fragment of ancient symbolism, reimagined through mid-century craftsmanship.
